LIMERICK >> Summer’s off to a flying start with the return of The Saucony Mile race down the airport runway this Friday.

The Chester County Running Store and the Saucony Shoe Company is hosting the run along the Heritage Field Airport landing strip in Limerick for the second year in a row. The address is 50 Airport Road, Pottstown.

The runway will be open to the community from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Friday for several mile-long races. Race divisions include elites, standard age groups and a kids’ category. About 200 people ran at last year’s event and race director Don Morrison is hoping to have just as great a turnout this year.

“It was very successful…we got a lot of response about how fun it was,” he said.

Morrison said the airport was happy to host the fitness, community event once again. He said the race is the same as it was last year with one exception. The Saucony Mile was designated a Pennsylvania State Championship Race by the Road Runners Club of America.

The running club is “the oldest and largest national association of running clubs, running events and runners dedicated to promoting running as a competitive sport and as healthy exercise,” according to the organization’s website www.rrca.org. The winners of Friday’s airport race will be considered a state champion by the running club.

In addition to a state title, there are several other awards up for grabs. The top elite winner will receive a money prize while winners of each age category will be awarded medals and discounts to the Chester County Running Store. All kids get a ribbon for participating.

All runners over 21 will get one free beer. A beer and burger garden will be available during the event as well at the picnic grove.

Adult registration is $15 until Wednesday and race-day registration is $20. The cost to register children is $5. Same day registration will take place at the airport picnic grove from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on Friday. People can register online at www.runccrs.com or www.runtheday.com. Participants can also register in person at the Chester County Running Store located at 38 Glocker Way in North Coventry.
