MONT CLARE >> About 70 people participated in the Schuylkill Canal Association Fundraiser Paddle Wednesday evening which brought in $1,800.

Paddlers started from the Lock 60 boat launch then traveled a five-mile loop along the canal. The annual event began last year to supports Schuylkill Canal Association volunteers and help them maintain the area. Last year’s funds were used to purchase tree removal equipment.

Doug Chapman, event organizer and owner of Take it Outdoors Adventures, made good on a promise when he navigated the river on a standup paddleboard while wearing a dress. Participants were able to see the amusing sight because the event exceeded the $1,500 fundraising goal. The evening also included free Sly Fox beer for all participants over the age of 21.

“It was a blast. People had a lot of fun,” Chapman said.

A navigation company built the Schuylkill Canal around 1816 to transport goods such as coal to Philadelphia. Lock 60 along the canal is now the only remaining operational lock of the former Schuylkill Navigation System.
