UPPER SALFORD >>The late fall sunshine fell on maintenance workers John Alderfer and Jonathan Hanson Wednesday afternoon, turning the soil underfoot to mud as the two worked to install and adjust a new exit ramp near the top of Spring Mountain for tubers to use when they begin their snowy run down the slope in Upper Salford.

There haven’t been any tubers, snowboarders or skiers yet this year because the weather has been too warm to make snow and Mother Nature hasn’t provided any. The 33 snowmaking machines are strategically arranged and all have been tested for sound operation and correct water pressure from their source, the Perkiomen Creek, according to Alderfer.

A couple of hundred feet below, owner Rick Buckman stood in a picnic area and explained that he usually likes to have the ski area, which is popular among people of school age, opened by mid-December and especially between Christmas and New Year’s when school is closed.

Looking skyward, he said, “We just need some cold weather.”
