Chili cook-off will mark downtown Pottstown FARM market debut May 5

POTTSTOWN >> Have a kick-butt chili recipe you like to show off?

Well if you register by April 30 you can test that kick-butt recipe against your neighbors’ in the first Chili Cook-Off that will mark the kick-off of Pottstown’s new downtown farmer’s market.

Called the Pottstown Farm Artisan Regional Market, or FARM for short, the downtown once-a-week market will open for the first time on Thursday, May 5, which is also Cinco De Mayo — hence the Chili cook-off.

The deadline for registering is Friday, April 30.

Chili masters will have to bring their chili in a crock pot with your name clearly marked on the bottom no later than 4:30 p.m. that day.

Judging will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and tasters will use tickets to mark their favorite chili in time for the winner to be announced at 7:30 p.m.

The market, which is being organized by a group of volunteers and sponsors, and is being spearheaded by the Pottstown Downtown Improvement District Authority, will be held every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. from May 5 to Oct. 13.

“We have music planned for every week of the summer from May to October and we’re pleased that people are constantly calling us and saying ‘hey, we want to be a part of this,’” PDIDA Executive Director Sheila Dugan told borough council Monday night.

Special Pottstown FARM re-usable bags are also being sold for $7 to market the market, as well as reduce the use of plastic bags.

Vendors will be lined up along the north side of the 200 block of High Street.

So far, 11 vendors have signed up to participate in the market.

They are:

• Jack’s Farm — www.jacksfarm.net — JACKS FARM was started from scratch and is operated by Dan and Deb Heckler. Family run, relatively small, commercial, USDA Certified Organic vegetable farm. Farming on their own 10-acre property for well over 10 years under USDA Certified Organic cultivation. USDA Certified Organic means no GMO products are used.

• Steer’s Vegetables — Vegetables grown from seeds / plants from seeds.

• Candle Krazy — www.candlekrazy.com — All-natural candles made of 100-percent certifiable kosher soy vegetable wax, from soybeans grown by American farmers. Cotton wicks, essential and high quality fragrance oils are used. All candle supplies are made in America. Tumblers are Anchor Hocking Glass, and containers that are made from recycled glass.
