NORTH COVENTRY >> More than 30 people were seen doing Latin style dances like the salsa and merengue at Coventry Mall last week for a free Zumba class.

Fitness classes along with other future healthy events are meant to engage the community, said Steve Batten, mall manager and marketing director. Batten said the Coventry Mall will now be providing people with services and an outlet to be healthy.

“It’s not just about being a retail center,” he said.

Batten reached out to Body Go Fitness to see if they would be willing to offer classes to the public. The studio’s Zumba instructor Desiree Heath taught the class last week and will continue to do so every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. until further notice. The class was held next to Dick’s Sporting Goods and Books a Million.

Batten said Zumba is for people of all ages as well as a great exercise for both men and women. He said Zumba is a great way to promote wellness and that Heath makes the class fun for participants.

“She is just a phenomenal Zumba instructor,” he said. “I only saw 20 minutes and I wanted to join in.”

In addition to the fitness classes, Batten said the mall will also have health screening. Rite Aid will provide a free blood pressure screen Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the mall’s center court which is outside of Kohl’s. Batten said he’s excited to form new partnerships and work with other wellness organizations.
