CrossFit Pottstown invites the community to honor veterans that have died in service with a Memorial Day workout Monday.

The athletic organization will have their 6th annual Memorial “Murph” which is free and open to the public. The workout begins 8 a.m. from 21 N. Hanover St. and includes running, pushups and squats. The “Murph” was named after U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, of Patchogue, N.Y. He was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. His family received a Medal of Honor on his behalf in 2007.

In addition to being a dedicated Navy SEAL, Murphy also did CrossFit. His favorite exercise was a 1-mile run warm-up, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and then ending with another 1-mile run. The workout is now named “The Murph” in his honor and CrossFits across the country do the activity. The exercise can be modified and scaled. People unable to do pull-ups can do jumping jacks instead. The number of reps for each activity can also be decreased. Kids are encouraged to ride along on scooters and bicycles.

After the fitness event, people can join other participants for breakfast at The Brick house which will open 9 a.m. Following breakfast, there will be a Memorial Day parade on High Street starting 10 a.m. For more information about the Memorial Murph at CrossFit Pottstown, call 610-327-1321 or email postmaster@pottstownkarate.com.

CrossFit Kazam, located at 75 Industrial Parkway, will also have a Memorial Day Murph workout beginning 8:30 a.m. The fitness activity will be done in heats. For more information, visit their website at crossfitkazam.com.
