UPPER POTTSGROVE >> People can get fit for free surrounded by nature with a new community exercise class being offered at the Althouse Arboretum beginning Tuesday evening.
“You don’t always need a gym membership to get a good workout,” said Stephanie Coleman, one of the organizers for the fitness class.
Coleman lives right across the street from the arboretum and said she runs the trails there often. The arboretum is made possible through a partnership between Upper Pottsgrove Township and Green Allies, a nonprofit organization that promotes environmental sustainability. The open space area had a grand opening last year and now includes several programs. Coleman noticed the arboretum had an outdoor classroom and thought it would be a great area to offer the public with a free healthy opportunity.
“I wish they had it when I was a kid growing up,” Coleman said speaking of the arboretum. “It’s a great use of space.”
Coleman is currently working on getting her personal training certification and while doing so thought it made sense to train individuals with free exercise classes called ArborFit. There will be a weekly evening class 6:3 p.m. Tuesdays and a weekly morning class 11 a.m. Saturdays.
Coleman will teach the classes along with her friend Kimberly Skalenera. She said each class will be different but include circuit training and cardio. Coleman said participants will be doing squats, lunges, high knees and more. Instead of dumbbells; people will use rocks as weights when doing upper body exercises. As for the cardio; there will be running relays and sprinting games to make it fun.
“I hate running on the treadmill,” Coleman said adding that the games will help people not focus on the running aspect but on just enjoying themselves.
She said the classes are for any fitness level and everyone is invited to come. She said the exercise can be modified for each individual. People interested in attending the classes are asked to send an email to the address firstname.lastname@example.org.
